Here’s a question for you: How long will you be dead?It sounds dramatic, but it’s worth thinking about.
We move through our days quickly. Someone asks, “How are you?” and we automatically answer, “Fine,” without thinking. But what if we paused for a moment and actually reflected? How am I really? When we step back and consider our life as a whole, we often find that things are far better than we realize.
Maybe you had a sore back recently, but now it’s better. And everything else is pretty good.Maybe work has been difficult, but you got through it—and you’re stronger now than you were before.Maybe your life is actually moving in the direction you hoped it would.Maybe 95% of your life is going really well.
But we rarely notice it.We rarely slow down long enough to appreciate what is working, what is improving, and what is already good.
Wayne Dyer once posed a powerful question:How long will you be dead?Think about that. How long will you be gone? A very long time. The number of days you will be alive compared to the number of days you won’t be is shockingly small. That means every single day you are alive is sacred. Every day is an opportunity. A gift. Something not to be wasted or dulled by autopilot living.
So the next time someone asks you, “How are you?” don’t respond automatically.Pause. Reflect. You may realize your answer is much better than “fine.”
