Listen at 100%: The Simple Habit That Makes People Feel Valued

This mindset is one of the most powerful ways to make people feel great. Most of us think we are good listeners, but in reality, probably fewer than 5% of people truly listen at an extraordinary level.

Years ago, I worked with a man named Lew. When Lew spoke, he had strong opinions. But when he listened, it was something unforgettable. He would widen his stance, cross his arms, lean in, and focus completely on you. It felt like the rest of the world disappeared and there was only the two of you. No distractions. No interruptions. Just pure attention. It gave you the feeling that what you were saying really mattered.

When we listen to people, we should treat them like they are the most important person in the world—because to them, they are. Give them your undivided attention. Tune out your phone, the room, and your thoughts about what you want to say next. When you do this, you give them a deep sense of value and importance. And as Dale Carnegie taught, feeling important is one of the strongest desires in all human beings.

Lew passed away unexpectedly a while back. I attended his memorial service on a weekday afternoon, assuming it might be a small gathering. But the church was packed. People lined up down the hall to speak about him. And every story had the same theme: Lew made them feel seen, heard, and valued.

That is the legacy of someone who listens at 100%.

When you give people your full attention, you make them feel like the most important person in the world. And people remember that. They remember you. Do this if you want to live a life that people speak about with warmth and admiration. That may be one of the truest measures of success.
