How to Know If You’re Living a Good Life

If we’re living life well, how do we know? No ceremony at the end.No trophy. No diploma handed to us on our deathbed says, Congratulations — you lived well.

So how do we measure it?

There are signs. But they’re subtle. If we’re not paying attention, we miss them.

Recently, I was in Bangkok staying with a friend and her daughter. It was my last day there, and I had a flight that night, so obviously timing was everything. Her daughter reminded me to leave early because traffic can be unpredictable.

Before I could say a word, my friend responded:

“Don’t worry about him — he’s a very responsible person.”

I didn’t expect that. It hit me harder than I would have imagined.

She noticed.

Something I’ve quietly worked on for years — being reliable, being someone people can count on — was seen. And acknowledged. No announcement. No applause. Just one sentence. But that sentence felt like an A on a report card. Or a promotion from a boss. Or a small badge of honor in the quiet school of life.

You can’t put it on a bumper sticker:“I’m an honor student in the school of being responsible.”

But those moments matter.

They are how we keep score.

Not with achievements or status or things that fade…but with the qualities in us that others feel.

  • Reliability

  • Kindness

  • Generosity

  • Patience

  • Integrity

  • Compassion

  • Effort

That’s the real scorecard.

So keep doing the work. Keep trying to be the person you’d be proud to know.

And then — pay attention. Because every now and then, someone will say something that tells you:

You’re on the right track.

And that one moment will make all the effort worth it.
