What’s Making You Happy These Days? A Simple Question to Shift Your Mindset

Most of us agree that life is short and that we should focus on being happy. It sounds obvious — almost too simple. But here’s the challenge: we don’t often stop to think about what’s actually making us happy right now, in real time.

Try asking yourself this question:

“What’s making me happy these days?”

Not what should make you happy. Not what used to make you happy. Not what you hope will make you happy one day.

But right now — today.

For many people, that question is surprisingly difficult to answer at first. We spend so much of our mental energy thinking about what we need to fix, change, or achieve that we overlook the parts of our lives that are already good.

Yet happiness is often hidden in the ordinary moments:

  • Finishing something you worked hard on

  • Sharing a meaningful conversation

  • Watching someone you love grow and change

  • Feeling good in your body

  • Enjoying a meal, a walk, a laugh

Recently, I asked myself this question. And the answers came slowly — but when they arrived, they were meaningful. I realized I’m genuinely happy about how healthy I feel. I’m excited to watch my niece and nephews grow up. I’m enjoying being outdoors more. I’m grateful for time with friends.

Life is really, really good when I notice it.

Asking “What’s making me happy these days?” brings your attention back to what already feels good. It reminds you that happiness isn’t something you’re waiting for — it’s something you're already experiencing, sometimes without realizing it.

So ask yourself — right now:

What’s making you happy these days?

And here’s your next step: Ask someone else the same question.

You’ll be amazed how quickly the conversation deepens, how easily gratitude surfaces, and how much lighter life feels when you remember what’s already working.

Happiness grows when you shine a light on it.
