Slow Down to Think Better: Why Deliberate Thinking Beats Rushing

This one is about slowing down.

We live in a world that moves fast. Notifications, meetings, deadlines, calls, constant decisions — everything is speeding up. It’s easy to feel like we have to keep up with the pace around us. But just because the world is rushing doesn’t mean we need to.

Clear, slow, deliberate thinking almost always beats quick, reactive action.

Let me give you an example. I recently got a new car and noticed something that actually made me excited — the oil filter was right in front and easy to reach. Finally, I thought, I can change my own oil. No more waiting in line or paying extra for something simple.

So I bought the supplies, got under the car, saw the drain plug, and without thinking twice, grabbed a wrench and loosened it.

Clear green fluid poured out.

Transmission fluid.

I had just drained the wrong system — all because I didn’t pause for a single second.I later learned I had to replace it at the dealership, and it cost $500. A painful reminder: fast thinking is not always smart thinking.

If I had slowed down — even for five seconds — I could’ve avoided the whole situation.

But we all do this. We rush into emails. We rush into responses. We rush into plans. And sometimes we rush into decisions that impact our career, money, relationships, and happiness.

Slow does not mean lazy.Slow means intentional.

A few extra seconds of thought can save hours, dollars, and stress. When we slow down, we:

  • Think more clearly

  • Make fewer mistakes

  • Make better decisions

  • Feel calmer and more grounded

This applies to everything — career planning, conversations, buying something, planning a vacation, or even just changing the oil.

Don’t get pulled into the speed of the world. The world can rush. You don’t have to.

So slow down.
