Most of us can agree — life moves fast. We’re busy, distracted, always planning the next thing. And even when we finally get what we’ve been waiting for, our minds often jump ahead instead of letting us enjoy the moment we’re in.
Not long ago, I decided to do something I had dreamed about for years: I took time away from everything and went into the desert, completely alone, just to read, write, and think. It was quiet, remote, peaceful — exactly what I wanted.
But as soon as I settled in, my mind went straight to, “What’s next?”Maybe I’ll come back when it’s warmer. Who should I bring next time? What will we do?
I had looked forward to this trip for so long, yet instead of being present, I was already planning the next trip. I caught myself doing the same thing with reading, with work, with conversations — always looking ahead instead of experiencing now.
Do you do this too? Do you get so focused on what’s next that you miss what’s happening right in front of you?
When you notice your attention drifting to the future, gently pull it back. Take a breath. Look around. Feel where you are. Let the moment land.
Anticipation can feel exciting, but real happiness doesn’t exist in the future or the past. Happiness only happens in the present. The more moments we can live fully — even small ones — the richer life becomes.
