A LinkedIn Tip That Shows What Kind of Professional You Really Are

Here’s a LinkedIn tip you probably haven’t thought about. We’ve all heard the phrase “It’s better to give than to receive.” We hear it during holidays or at charity events, but rarely does it show up in a Monday morning status meeting. A friend of mine used to work at LinkedIn, and he shared something that really stuck with me. He asked, “How many recommendations do you have?” You know—the section at the bottom of your profile where people can write kind words about working with you. I said, slightly embarrassed, maybe four or five. Then he asked, “How many have you given?” I wasn’t sure, but I guessed maybe seven. He smiled and said, “Good.”

He explained that it’s actually a better reflection on you to have given more recommendations than you’ve received. And when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. LinkedIn is a living resume—a reflection of who we are in our professional relationships. There’s nothing wrong with receiving glowing recommendations. But consider this: isn’t it an even stronger reflection of your character to show that you have given more than you’ve received?

How often do we see profiles claiming “team player” and “people-focused,” yet they haven’t written a single recommendation for anyone? If we truly want to show that we support others, that we value the people we work with, and that we contribute to the success around us—what better way than to express it in writing?

If you want a few examples of how that looks in practice, check out my profile. And feel free to connect with me while you’re there. Recommendations take time and effort—but anything worthwhile does. Don’t wait. Give one today.
