Be Careful of Forward Thinking: How to Stop Missing the Present

Most of us can agree that these days, we rarely slow down.

I’ve always wanted to take time away from everything — to go somewhere quiet and just read, write, and think. So I finally did it. I went alone to the desert, far from people, far from noise, far from distractions. It was beautiful. It was peaceful. It was exactly what I had wanted.

But as soon as I settled in, something surprising happened. My mind didn’t stay with the moment I had been dreaming of for years — instead, it jumped ahead.

What’s next? I should come back when it’s warmer. I should bring friends. Who would I invite? What would we do?

I had waited so long for this experience — and while I was living it, I was already planning the next one.

Then I noticed I was doing the same thing with everything else. What book should I read tomorrow ? What should I do later today? What will I work on when I get home?

It hit me hard: I was missing the very moment I had wanted for so long.

Do you do that too? Do you find yourself planning, anticipating, preparing — and often missing the thing happening right now?

Forward thinking feels productive. It feels exciting. But it also pulls us away from the only place happiness can ever truly exist — the present moment.

When you catch your mind racing ahead, try this:

Pause.Breathe.Say to yourself, “I am here.”Then stay with what’s in front of you — the sights, the sounds, the feelings.

The future will come on its own. Happiness is only ever available right now. Don’t miss it.
