Don’t Pay Your Enemies: How to Protect Your Time and Emotional Energy

This one is about rethinking the way we spend.

Most of us dislike paying taxes, tolls, hidden fees, or dealing with inflation. We accept those costs because we don’t have much choice if we want to participate in everyday life. But would you knowingly hand money to someone who took advantage of you? Of course not. Yet we do it every single day — just not with money.

We often forget that what we really work for isn’t just money. What we truly work for is time. Time to live the way we want. Time to feel happiness. Time to enjoy the people we care about. Money can help us maximize that time, but money can’t give us more time. And time is always our most precious resource.

So imagine this: would you ever hand your enemy a hundred dollars? Would you give them your car keys? No way. But many of us give something even more valuable than that — we give them our energy. Our emotional peace. Our happiness.

We spend hours, sometimes days, being frustrated, angry, resentful, or replaying what someone said or did to us. That emotional expense is far more costly than any hidden fee. Once that time is spent, it’s gone. You don’t get it back.

Think of the moments we lose to irritation over an email, a rude comment, or someone cutting us off in traffic. Every time we dwell on it, we are essentially pulling out our wallet and handing over something precious — our life energy.

So the next time your boss criticizes you unfairly, or someone sends a rude message, notice the instinct to carry that frustration. Then picture yourself literally handing that person your wallet. That visual will remind you that your peace is worth far more than that moment. It’s not worth paying them with your happiness.

Your time is your treasure. Spend it wisely.
