Get Over Yourself: A Simple Way to Reduce Stress and Feel Better

This one is about getting over yourself.

When we feel stressed, overwhelmed, or frustrated, most of us fall into the same internal dialogue:

My job is too hard. Nothing is working out for me. Why does everything fall on me?

The common denominator in every one of those thoughts is me. Not the world. Not other people.Us.

A useful way to understand stress is this: Stress is often an obsession with ourselves.

When our thoughts revolve around our struggles, our discomfort, and our expectations, the world shrinks down to the size of our own problems. And everything feels heavier.

So how do we break out of that mental loop?

We get over ourselves.

And the way to do that is surprisingly simple:

Put someone else first.

Not in a dramatic, life-altering way. You don’t need to sell everything and move overseas to do humanitarian work.

Just start where you are. Right now.

When you see someone in front of you, actually see them. Look them in the eye.Smile.Ask how they’re doing — and wait for the answer.

When you’re standing in an elevator, instead of staring at your phone, turn to the person next to you and say,“How’s your day going?”

Don’t worry if you feel like doing it. Do it anyway.

For those few seconds, the moment becomes not about you — and that alone can bring relief.

Because when we stop focusing on ourselves, something powerful happens: We loosen the grip of our mind’s constant need for validation, protection, and control.

It’s incredibly freeing.

Start noticing these small moments. Give yourself small reminders to step out of your head and into the world.

Get over yourself — just a little — every day.
