How to Let Go of Guilt and Finally Make Progress on Your Goals

We all have a list of things we want to do someday:

  • Learn a new language

  • Play an instrument

  • Volunteer in our community

  • Start a creative project or hobby

  • Or even launch that new dance trend that goes viral

And yet, day after day, week after week, year after year… we don’t do them.

We carry these things in our minds. They sit there quietly, just waiting for the “right time.”And every time we see a guitar in a shop window, or hear someone speaking another language, or scroll past someone else achieving something… we feel it: guilt.

Guilt is heavy. And when it follows us for years, it steals joy from the present.

But here’s something most people don’t realize:

Guilt is not meant to stay. Guilt is a teaching emotion — not a living emotion.

Its purpose is to nudge us. To say: “Hey, this matters to you.”But once we get the message, holding onto guilt only weighs us down.

So try this:

  1. Write down your entire “someday” list. Every skill, hobby, experience, and dream. Big or small.

  2. Choose the one thing that truly matters most right now. The one that would make you genuinely proud to make progress on.

  3. Put the rest in a folder or note titled: “Not Now — But Not Forgotten.”These aren’t abandoned. They’re simply waiting their turn.

This removes the mental clutter. And the emotional burden.

As Warren Buffett famously teaches:

The biggest enemy of the most important goals is every other goal.

Then — start doing just a little of your top goal each day.Ten minutes counts. One page counts. One lesson counts.

Your first goal — before any other — is:

Let Go of the Guilt.Because guilt keeps you stuck. But clarity and small action move you forward.

And every day you take even a tiny step, you replace guilt with momentum — and that feels amazing.
