Be ready for this question: How are you? Or how was your week?
How often do we hear the same answers? Busy. Crazy. We say it without thinking, and we hear it without thinking. But when we hear it, it instantly brings to mind frustration, stress, exhaustion, and overwhelm. Without meaning to, we just reminded someone of how tired they feel. And then they usually agree and say, “Yeah… same here.” Now the whole conversation is shaped by stress before it even begins.
We don’t realize it, but people make unconscious judgments about us every time we speak. They decide, often instantly, whether being around us feels uplifting or draining. And that decision usually comes from the very first sentence.
So what if we changed our first sentence?
Instead of saying we were swamped or overwhelmed, we could say something like:
“I learned some things about patience this week that will help me a lot.”
“I was surprised by how well I handled a lot of different challenges at once.”
“This week taught me something interesting about myself.”
When you share what you learned instead of how busy you were, people lean in. They get curious. They want to know more. You’ve created an opening for connection rather than stress.
Saying you had a busy week ends a conversation. Saying you grew, discovered, or learned something starts one.
Most people go their entire lives without thinking about their automatic response to a simple greeting. But if you give it even a small amount of thought, you can become the person people want to talk to — the one who brings energy, curiosity, and lightness into the room.
Be the person that others are glad to run into.
