Technology and the pandemic have changed communication forever. It’s incredible that we now have friends and coworkers all over the world that we interact with daily. Our ancestors would be amazed at how many people we know—but they might also be disappointed in how we treat those connections. We’ve replaced in-person conversations and phone calls with short digital messages. It’s easier, but it isn’t the same. We miss the shared experiences and real-time back-and-forth that build strong relationships.
So how do we maintain meaningful relationships when so much of our communication is through text and email?
First, we need to treat people far away as if they were standing right in front of us. If someone were physically in front of you, you wouldn’t ignore their question. You wouldn’t walk away without responding. You wouldn’t rush your words. Yet, we often do exactly that in digital communication.
The key is to imagine the person sitting across from you when you text or email. Picture their face. Picture their tone. Picture how they might feel reading your message. When you do this, you naturally communicate with more empathy, more clarity, and more care. And when people feel cared for, the relationship strengthens immediately.
Before you send your next message, pause for a moment and imagine the person is right there with you. A tiny shift in mindset can completely change the way you connect—and it will change how others respond to you as well.
Digital communication doesn’t have to weaken relationships. With the right mindset, it can strengthen them.
