What is the most valuable thing you own? Some might say their house. Others might say their investments. Some might even say their relationships, because we invest in them and they hold lasting value. All of these are true in their own way. But every one of them can fade over time.
The most valuable thing you own is your attention.
You decide every day where you put your attention—so it’s uniquely yours. And it shapes everything in your life. Your results, your relationships, your mood, your growth—all are determined by where your attention goes.
If you want to know what you truly want in life, look at where your attention is right now. Do you want happiness? Then why spend your attention complaining or replaying negative interactions in your mind? That doesn’t create happiness. Paying attention to the things that make you feel good is what makes you feel good.
Do you want to achieve meaningful goals? Then look closely at how much focus you give to distractions. How much time do you spend scrolling, worrying, comparing, or numbing? And how much time do you spend intentionally moving toward the things you say you want? If the answer doesn’t match your goals, shift your attention.
Where you put your attention is a choice. And it is yours alone. The first step is simply noticing where your attention is going. Once you see that clearly, you can redirect it away from what drains you and toward what builds you.
Your phone does not own your attention. Negative people do not own your attention. Binge-watching does not own your attention. You own it. And it is the most valuable thing you have.
